Gentle and safe surgery

To keep procedures as limited and gentle as possible, our highly specialised surgeons use minimally invasive techniques whenever appropriate. Smaller incisions mean more than smaller scars: preserving muscles and tendons also reduces the risk of complications. A shorter hospital stay and faster rehabilitation help patients regain their quality of life.

During the procedure, a highly qualified anaesthesia team uses state-of-the-art anaesthetic equipment and techniques to ensure that surgery is pain-free and safe. Avoiding postoperative pain as far as possible is another important part of our treatment approach. We achieve this by actively involving patients before surgery in the development of an appropriate pain-management plan tailored to their individual needs.

Anaesthesia and pain relief

Pre-anaesthetic consultation

Before every operation, you will have a personal pre-anaesthetic consultation. Together, we discuss all the important aspects of your anaesthetic.

Your individual circumstances are at the centre of the discussion. We review:

  • Your pre-existing conditions and medication
  • Possible risk factors
  • The most suitable anaesthetic technique for you
  • What happens before, during and after surgery

We will be happy to answer all your questions and take the time to discuss your concerns.

How to prepare

Please bring the following documents with you, if available:

  • Medication plan
  • Previous findings, such as medical letters or an ECG
  • Allergy card
Detailed risk assessment

For larger and more complex procedures in particular, we carry out a detailed assessment of each patient’s individual risk, based on their medical history and a clinical examination.

The examination is usually carried out by the patient’s GP before surgery. If other conditions increase the perioperative risk, additional investigations may be needed. We offer comprehensive internal medicine diagnostics for this purpose.

Close monitoring after surgery

After surgery, our nursing team provides professional care in the recovery area and on the ward. Intermediate care beds are available when closer medical monitoring is required.

Central monitoring of vital signs continues even after transfer to a standard ward, enabling the team to identify even small deviations promptly. If post-operative complications arise, diagnostic assessment and treatment are available on site.

Modern anaesthetic techniques

We use modern, well-tolerated techniques:

  • General anaesthesia
  • Regional anaesthesia (e.g. spinal anaesthesia)
  • Local and regional anaesthetic techniques

Our aim is to minimise the strain on your body and support a swift recovery.

Modern pain management

Alongside medication, we use ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia to relieve pain by temporarily numbing individual nerves. Our anaesthesia team has exceptional expertise in applying this technique for orthopaedic and trauma surgery.

For complex pain-management needs, we also use additional medication and complementary techniques such as neural therapy, acupuncture or TENS stimulation. Specialist pain therapists and physiotherapists work closely together. By reducing post-operative pain substantially, we support earlier mobilisation, a faster recovery and higher patient satisfaction.

  • Not permitted: Sweets, chewing gum or smoking.
Questions about anaesthesia or an appointment request

The Anaesthesiology Department is responsible, rather than an MVZ practice or the Trauma Clinic, even if your blood test and ECG are carried out here.

Should I take my medication before surgery?
  • You may take your usual medication with a sip of water.
  • If you take blood-thinning or diabetes medication (tablets/insulin), discuss in advance with your doctor whether and when to take it.

  • For 24 hours after anaesthesia, you are considered not fit to make legally binding decisions. Do not drive, operate machinery or sign contracts.
  • Do not consume alcohol or tobacco.
  • Arrange for someone to stay with you on the day of surgery and throughout the first night.

What should I bring to my pre-anaesthetic consultation?
  • Examination results from your GP (if you have underlying conditions)
  • Your current medication plan
  • Your completed anaesthesia questionnaire (yellow edge)
