Interview with surgical technologist trainee Jil Luisa

Hi, I’m Jil. I completed my Abitur in 2020 with a focus on health. I had always wanted a social profession in which I could see and experience a great deal, so I decided to train as a surgical technologist.
What do you particularly enjoy about your training?
What I like most is the wide range of fields you can choose from, such as orthopaedics and trauma surgery, visceral surgery, paediatric surgery or cardiac surgery. You also learn an incredible amount about the anatomy of the body and how it functions.
Do you have a personal highlight?
My personal highlight was the surgeons’ congress in Munich. It was an opportunity to meet different medical device manufacturers and see the latest developments. In general, I really enjoyed learning.
How do you like working with us at Klinik Manhagen?
I would choose Klinik Manhagen and this training again at any time because I was never left on my own here. There was always someone available to help with questions or problems. You also spend time at other hospitals and learn about their different operating departments and ways of working. It was enjoyable and educational, and it also made me much more confident.
Interview with surgical technologist trainee Maria

Hi, my name is Maria, I am 25 years old and I will be completing my training as an operating theatre assistant at the end of September. I work in the operating theatre, where I prepare procedures, support and instrument operations and take care of the work required before and afterwards.
What do you like about your job?
What I especially enjoy is the close interdisciplinary cooperation between anaesthesia, operating theatre nursing and the surgical teams. This goes hand in hand with complex, responsible tasks that bring new challenges every day. Even though we have standardised procedures, every patient is different.
What has been your personal highlight?
Every opportunity to instrument a new and complex procedure has been a highlight because it allowed me to develop my knowledge and skills. I have also met many different people who accompanied and influenced me along the way and brightened many of my days.
What do you particularly like about Klinik Manhagen?
I would choose Klinik Manhagen again because the orthopaedics department prepares you exceptionally well. You learn about many different systems and procedures and gain experience of a wide variety of surgical techniques. Combined with placements at other hospitals covering all the other disciplines, it was the perfect balance and ideal preparation for my future role. I particularly appreciate the working hours: there are no on-call duties and the working week follows a regular Monday-to-Friday schedule.

About surgical technologist training

A high level of responsibility combined with a cool head and strong teamwork: does that sound exciting to you?
As a member of the operating theatre team, you care for patients before, during and after surgical procedures or examinations, making an important contribution to patient safety. You prepare procedures and make sure that the required medical equipment, instruments and other medical devices are ready.
By providing qualified, skilled surgical assistance, you share responsibility for ensuring that procedures run quickly and smoothly, working as the surgeon’s partner in the operating theatre.
Another aspect of a surgical technologist’s role is to support the operating team as a circulating practitioner. During an operation, you may provide additional equipment, pass over further instruments and other medical devices, and receive specimens correctly. You have considerable responsibility for ensuring compliance with infection control requirements.
Outside the operating department, a surgical technologist is also qualified to reprocess instruments and other medical devices in the Sterile Services Department.
Within your area of work, you help develop and implement quality and safety standards and maintain a high level of patient safety. Complete and professionally accurate documentation is also part of your role, alongside other organisational and administrative duties.
